Artist to Watch: Francesco Yates

If you have heard Robin Schulz’s “Sugar” on the radio then you should know who Francesco Yates is. If not, now is the time to become familiar with the name. Since stumbling upon his music in 2014, Francesco Yates has invaded my playlists. The 20-year-old Canadian pop singer is slowly but surely making a major impact on the music scene and has the backing from artists such as Bruno Mars and Justin Timberlake to prove it.

The Toronto native has been making music since he was much younger, but his flame was ignited at age eleven upon watching the film School of Rock. After watching the film, Francesco began taking the necessary steps to make music a career path. He started writing songs, learning to play the piano and guitar, and his parents enrolled him various music camps while school was out for the summer. In an interview with Francesco said, “Music was a passion for me that happened all at once. I just wanted to do it all the time. Something clicked in my head and that was it.” His passion for music landed him a record deal at 16 with Atlantic Records. He has been working hard on his debut album and exploring different entities for his sound.

His signing with Atlantic Records has afforded him the opportunity to work with producers like Robin Hannibal, who has worked with artists such as B.o.B. and Kendrick Lamar, and Pharrell Williams. “Francesco is absolutely gonna be just a huge, huge, huge pop star. But not in the way people have been thinking of pop music in the past ten years” Williams told MTV. Francesco is pushing the envelope with his clever combination of Pop, R&B, and Soul, mature songwriting skills, and sultry vocals.

Francesco Yates debut self-titled EP is the perfect showcase of his musicality. It features a blend of styles over six tracks. He begins the EP exploring his suave side with the soul-drenched tracks “Honey I’m Home” and “Something Different.” He switches gears with tracks “Better to Be Loved,” “Call,” and “Change the Channel,” which features a combination of pop mixed with sounds of contemporary R&B and elements of funk and rock. He ends with the slow-burning synth track “When I Found You” that revisits his smooth vocals, making the EP a ten out of ten.

The foundation the young singer has already built for himself has him on the right track to have a successful and long music career. Francesco Yates is one force to be reckoned with and is an artist you MUST watch. Familiarize yourself with him now! I promise you will not be disappointed.
